Frequently Asked Questions About Winter Service

The seasons are changing and before you know it winter will be here in Minden. Is your Subaru ready? While Subaru's are ready for winter with the best all-wheel-drive system on the road it is always a good idea to bring your Outback, Impreza or Crosstrek in to Michael Hohl Subaru for a little winter service to ensure safe and reliable performance when the conditions are less than ideal.

  • Q:Will my summer tires work in the snow?

A: Many South Lake Tahoe drivers have two sets of tires, summer and winter tires. We highly recommend having either all-season tires or swapping your tires over to snow tires for winter. Snow tires are made from softer rubber that better handles colder temps and also feature deeper treads to provide better traction in the snow. If you don't have snow tires or good all season tires our parts center is here to order the right tires for your Ascent or WRX.

  • Q: Should I wash my Subaru in the winter?

A: Yes! It may seem silly to wash your Subaru in the winter when it won't stay clean for very long. But washing your vehicle in the winter is actually a very good idea with how much road salt is put down over the course of winters in South Lake Tahoe. Road salt can be damaging to your cars paint and to your undercarriage. Washing your vehicle once a month with just water to get the salt off will go a long way to keeping your paint and undercarriage from getting corroded. It will also keep ice from building up in the wheel wells.

  • Q: What are other services my Subaru may need for winter?

A: In addition to having your tires swapped to match the seasonal driving conditions there is a number of things to have checked. Like your battery, brakes, all exterior lights, wiper blade, washer fluid levels, coolant levels, belts and hoses, and to have your oil changed. If you own your Subaru and plan on going to the 200,000-mile mark we suggest having the car undercoated around 80,000-miles. Undercoating your Subaru will protect your undercarriage from corrosion and rust.

  • Q: Should I put in an emergency kit in my Subaru?

A: Having an emergency kit in your Subaru is always a good idea, you never know when you may need it. A few things that Carson City drivers will want to keep in their car during the winter include a blanket, flashlight and batteries, jumper cables, road flares or reflector triangle, duct tape, first aid kit, phone battery, and ice scraper.

  • A few smaller service items will go a long way to ensure your Subaru is ready for everything that winter has to through your way. Whether you are commuting to work or heading out to the slopes you can feel confident that your Subaru is going to get you through the snow and to your final destination.
