​​If You’re Looking for Practicality, TopSpeed.com Thinks You Should Consider a Used Impreza​

TopSpeed.com points out that most people looking for a practical and economical used sedan or 4-door hatch immediately zero in on the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and, if they are a little more open-minded, the Mazda 3.  The Subaru Impreza tends to get overlooked. They think that shouldn’t be the case, and Michael Hohl Subaru agrees. 

Subaru is best known for its crossovers like the Outback, Forester, and the Crosstrek, the latter of which is a more off-road-capable version of the Impreza hatchback.  But for those who prefer to remain on the pavement, the Impreza, which shares the same body as the best-selling Crosstrek, and thus has the same passenger and cargo space, can be a more attractive proposition.  

TopSpeed.com focused on the possibility of a used model, zeroing in on a 2023 model, which is of the same design generation as the current Impreza.  “While everyone is focused on the Civic, you can reach the same potential with the Impreza, and no one would bat an eye.”   

Compared to its rivals of the time, no Civic has all-wheel drive (AWD), and very few Corollas offered the sure-footed driveline – but all Impreza models offer AWD as standard equipment, and have for quite some time.  The system is not there for off-roading (though it will have its advantages off the pavement) but rather to keep you on the road, particularly if it is raining or even snowing. Taking full advantage of the traction provided by all four tires is a level of safety that simply can’t be matched by electronic wizardry. 

When it comes to such wizardry, however, the 2023 Impreza didn’t skimp, thanks to a full set of Eye Sight safety and driver assistance features including Pre-Collision Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist & Sway Warning, and Pre-Collision Throttle Management, along with Steering responsive headlights, and on the Premium and Sport model, Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.  It’s also worth pointing out that the 2023 Impreza earned an overall 5-star rating from the NHTSA and was an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK. 

Under the hood, the Impreza keeps things simple with a non-turbocharged 2.0-liter “flat” 4-cylinder engine producing 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque.  This is not a recipe for winning drag races, but it does just fine around town and speeding up on the on-ramp to the freeway.  Meanwhile, it gets 23 city and 31 highway mpg, which is impressive (Imprezive?) for an AWD vehicle.  

While Subarus are known for their resale value, the 2023 Impreza bypasses the Civic’s icon status, which can save you thousands. TopSpeed.com cited KBB’s Fair Purchase Pricing, which shows about $17,500 to $21,800 for 2023 Imprezas, depending on mileage, trim level, and condition. At the same time, they found the 2023 Civic starting at $21,500 and going up from there, so those are a few thousand reasons to consider the recent-year Impreza over the Civic.
