2026 Subaru Uncharted vs the Competition

Hyundai’s gas- and electric-powered Kona models share the same basic platform, though Hyundai claims the EV was developed first. There is no 2026 Kona Electric, but you are likely to find 2025 models in stock. The base model offers 133 horsepower and a 48.6 kWh battery, providing approximately 200 miles of range. Upper models offer 201 horsepower, a 64.8 kWh battery, and a range of 230–261 miles, depending on whether it is equipped with 17- or 19-inch wheels. It is unclear as of this writing whether the Kona Electric will return for 2027.  

• The starting MSRPs of the Uncharted and Kona Electric are just a few hundred dollars apart ($34,995 vs. $34,470).
• All Uncharted models have notably higher range than the Kona Electric (273–308 vs. 200–261 miles).
• The least expensive Uncharted has the highest range (308 miles), while the least expensive Kona Electric has the lowest range (200 miles).
• The Uncharted base model has significantly more horsepower than the Kona base model (221 vs. 133).
• The Uncharted Sport and GT models have 68% more horsepower than the top-tier Kona Electric models (338 vs. 201).
• The Uncharted has a larger center touchscreen than the Kona Electric (14.0 vs. 12.3 inches).
• For off-pavement use, the Uncharted has notably higher ground clearance (8.3 vs. 5.9 inches).
• The Uncharted uses a NACS charging port, giving it access to the Tesla Supercharger network, while the Kona Electric uses a CCS port.
• For improved braking, the Uncharted’s front and rear brake rotors are larger than the Kona Electric’s (12.9 / 12.5 vs. 12.0 / 11.8 inches).
• The Uncharted’s 3.6-inch-longer wheelbase provides a more stable highway ride than the Kona Electric’s.
• When more than one driver regularly drives, a driver’s position memory system is very handy. The Uncharted Sport and GT trims have a memory system, but it is not offered on the Kona Electric.

The Niro is available with hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and EV drivetrains. It has distinctly upright proportions for a roomy cabin and a unique two-tone exterior treatment. It features a front 201-horsepower motor powering the front wheels. It is estimated to have a range of 253 miles with its 64.8 kWh battery. Acceleration is relaxed but acceptable, with a 0-60 time of 6.7 seconds, according to Car and Driver. The Niro EV is available in Wind and Wave trim levels.

• The Uncharted has a significantly lower starting MSRP of $34,995, compared to $39,995 for the Niro EV Wind.
• All Uncharted models have higher estimated operating ranges than the 253 miles of the Niro EV.
• The base Uncharted has more horsepower than the Niro EV (221 vs. 201)
• The Uncharted GT is price-comparable to the Niro EV Wave ($43,795 vs. $44,700) but offers considerably more horsepower (338 vs. 201) and better range (273 vs. 253 miles).
• The Uncharted is equipped with driver- and front-passenger knee airbags to help prevent sliding under the dashboard in a frontal collision. The Niro EV is not equipped with front knee airbags.
• The Uncharted Sport and GT have all-wheel drive to optimize available traction.  The Niro EV is front-wheel drive only.
• The 360 camera system on the Sport and GT models is not available on the Niro EV.
• The Uncharted features a washer system for the rear camera.  This is not available on the Niro EV.

The subcompact Volvo EX30 is the smallest model in Volvo’s lineup. While Volvo is decidedly upscale in most of its offerings, the EX30 focuses on providing the basics, at least in its base form. The base model, with a single 268-horsepower motor, starts at $40,345. It has an estimated range of 261 miles. A twin-motor all-wheel-drive model costs $6,000 more but produces 422 horsepower and still provides a range of 253 miles. 

The interior features some of Volvo’s Scandinavian design and upscale surfaces made from recycled materials. However, it is noticeably minimalist, including a Tesla-like lack of a driver information center and physical controls for the climate and other systems. 

2026 will be the last year for the EX30, as Volvo has pulled the model from the U.S. due to tariffs and federal EV policy. The price-comparable Uncharted model to the $40,345 base EX30 is the $39,795 Sport model. 

• The Uncharted Sport has 338 horsepower and all-wheel drive, compared with 268 horsepower and front-wheel drive on the base EX30.
• The Uncharted Sport has an estimated range of 287 miles, compared with 261 miles for the base EX30.
• All Uncharted models offer a driver information center with positioning that effectively doubles as a head-up display, while the EX30 relies on the center screen for driving information.
• The Uncharted has considerably more cargo space with the rear seats up (25.3 vs. 12.4 cubic feet) and with the seats down (59.5 vs. 27.8 cubic feet).
• The EX30 is equipped with a wireless phone charger, whereas the Uncharted has dual wireless phone chargers.
• Heated front seats are standard on the Uncharted but are optional on the EX30.
• Cooled seats are standard on the Uncharted GT but not available on the EX30.
• The Uncharted has a locking charge port. The EX30’s charge port is not lockable.
• The Uncharted is equipped with driver- and front-passenger knee airbags to help prevent sliding under the dashboard in a frontal collision. The EX30 is not equipped with front knee airbags.
• The Uncharted features a washer system for the rear camera and the headlight washers, neither of which is available on the EX30.

Although the Equinox EV shares its name with the brand’s gas-powered model, unlike the Hyundai Kona, it is a completely different vehicle on a separate platform with its own exterior and interior design. The Equinox is larger than the other models in these comparisons. Its wheelbase is 8 inches longer than the Uncharted’s, it is 13 inches longer overall, and a little over 3 inches wider. Aside from its footprint, however, the Equinox EV’s specs are surprisingly close. The horsepower of 220 with FWD and 300 with AWD are certainly in the Uncharted’s territory, and the range of 319 for FWD and 288 or 307 for AWD are also close to the Uncharted. To confirm the compatibility point, its base MSRP of $34,995 is an exact match for the Uncharted.

• While the FWD modes have effectively the same horsepower (221 vs. 220), the Uncharted weighs over 800 pounds more, giving it an edge in acceleration and handling.
• The AWD Uncharted has more horsepower (338 vs. 300) while still weighing about 643 pounds less. As expected, the Uncharted GT accelerates from 0-60 mph significantly faster than the Equinox AWD model (4.3 vs. 5.8 seconds) according to Car and Driver.
• The Uncharted charges significantly faster than the Equinox EV, with a standard 10% to 80% charge time of ~20 minutes, vs. 40 minutes for the Equinox EV.
• The Equinox EV’s larger size is reflected in 6 more inches of rear legroom (32.2 vs. 38.0 inches). However, front legroom and front and rear headroom are all within an inch of each other.
• The Uncharted and Equinox trade advantages in cargo space, with the Equinox having more with the rear seat up (25.3 vs. 26.4 cubic feet) but the Uncharted having more when the rear seat is down (59.5 vs. 57.2 cubic feet).
• The Uncharted has significantly more ground clearance than the Equinox (8.3 vs. 6.4 inches) and smaller front and rear overhangs.
• The standard downhill assist on the AWD Uncharted models enables you to descend a steep hill slowly and steadily. The Equinox does not have an equivalent feature.
• Subaru is ranked #1 in Consumer Reports’ brand rankings based on safety, vehicle testing, and owner feedback on reliability. Chevrolet ranked 24th.
• The Uncharted has a locking charge port to prevent tampering. The Equinox EV charge port is not lockable.
• With a shorter wheelbase and a significantly shorter overall length, the Uncharted has a two-foot tighter turning circle, making it easier to maneuver and park in tight spaces.
• The Uncharted features a washer system for the headlights and rear camera.  Neither feature is available on the Equinox EV.
• Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard on the Uncharted but is optional on the Equinox EV.
• Dual wireless phone charging is standard on the Uncharted. The Equinox has only a single phone charger, and it is not standard on the base model.
