​​How X-MODE Works in the 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness​

There has been a lot of love circling around the 2026 Subaru Outback since its arrival into our dealership. Consumers and the automotive press alike have praised the increased interior headroom and cargo space, along with the improved 12.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, the new generation EyeSight driver assist technology, and so much more.  

 While the Outback itself turns heads, the 2026 Outback Wilderness model really commands attention. It is truly a perfect fit for drivers in our corner of the country, as it exudes a rugged nature that matches our own pioneering spirit here around the Lake Tahoe area and throughout western Nevada.  

One such feature on Outback Wilderness: the dual-mode X-MODE traction management system. It works to provide more grip throughout the Symmetrical all-wheel drive system to all four wheels through preset mapping using the right of torque to get you going.  

X-MODE allows for the ideal management of traction for a variety of different situations, but instead of having to fine-tune things like traction or stability control individually, X-MODE lets the driver select the best combination with a single push of a button mounted on the steering wheel. One quick push, confirmed with a message on the new 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, is all it takes to fine-tune the Outback Wilderness for the roads or trails ahead.

Selecting Snow/Dirt, for instance, is perfect for navigating maintained forest roads, unpaved desert trails, and unplowed roads after a light snowstorm. Pressing the button twice will get you into the Deep Snow/Mud setting, which is designed to maximize torque and power through tougher conditions, like washed-out trails or heavier snowfalls.  

While X-MODE is not a silver bullet, it does work in concert with other hallmarks of the Outback Wilderness – including its 9.3 inches of ground clearance and retuned suspension with increased shock travel – to improve its prowess over challenging terrain. 

Which leaves us with a question: Does X-MODE really work? In short, yes. Ideally, it’s best to enable a particular X-MODE setting before setting off into a particular type of environment in order to take full advantage of this technology as soon as you reach a muddy path or snowy road, but it’s always easy to switch between modes as conditions evolve.
