The new 2026 Subaru Outback has everyone talking. With more space than before and a host of technology updates, it is definitely a hot topic of conversation.
This includes the experts at Car and Driver. They start by acknowledging its loyal following of proud owners of this segment-breaking vehicle, which has been a staple for 30 years. With this seventh-generation model, they said that “it represents a shift in the Outback ethos.”
What does that mean? According to Car and Driver, it means distinguishing itself from other SUVs in its size class. They described the exterior as “boxier than ever before, with a blunt front end, tall fenders, and an upright C-pillar.” The 2026 Outback retains its 8.7-inch ground clearance, whereas the new Wilderness model was raised to 9.5 inches. Standard models have an overall height of 67.5 inches – an increase of 1.4 inches over the outgoing model. All other exterior dimensions remain largely unchanged.
There are some benefits to the new design, “where headroom is increased, and accommodations for front and rear passengers feel airy. There's also an extra two cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats.” There is an inch more headroom inside the 2026 Outback, thanks to its taller roofline. Cargo space is now up to 34.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats, expandable to 80.5 cubic feet with those seats lowered.
Also inside is a new 12.3-inch digital driver display, along with a new 12.1-inch infotainment touchscreen with a new software architecture. Car and Driver remarked that they “found it to be more responsive and easier to use than before.” Also, “the climate controls are now on a separate panel lower on the dashboard, and many other buttons for various vehicle settings are now easily operable on the center console.”
Across all trim levels, a choice of engines is available. Standard 2026 Outback models are powered by the 180-horsepower 2.5-liter BOXER four-cylinder engine. XT models get the 260-horsepower turbocharged 2.4-liter BOXER engine. Both engines are mated to the Lineartronic continuously variable transmission and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. All models get the added benefit of X-MODE, which uses a preset condition in the driveline for improved traction through snow, sand, and mud.
The EyeSight Driver Assist Technology also received improvements in the 2026 Outback. That now includes the new Highway Hands-Free Assist feature, which enables you to take a more relaxing drive at speeds of up to 85 MPH.
In summary, Car and Driver said, “Subaru does know its customers better than pretty much any other automaker, and it's wagering that the new Outback's extra space, improved EyeSight driver-assist technologies, new features, and name recognition will seal the deal with existing owners looking to trade up.”
