Subaru of Indiana Plant Starts Producing New Hybrids

Subaru built its Indiana plant in the ‘80s, started producing cars there in 1989, and, as the company’s only production facility outside Japan, has assembled over six million vehicles since. Now, some new Subaru hybrid models will be produced at the Subaru of Indiana Automotive Inc. (SIA) plant.
More Than Just an Auto Plant
The Lafayette, Indiana, facility began producing the new Forester Hybrid on October 7, 2025, alongside the Ascent, Crosstrek, and gas-only Forester models. SIA employs over 6,500 people and has become a mainstay of Lafayette, focusing on the future of the plant and the surrounding community.
A Word from Subaru
“Bringing hybrid vehicle assembly to our facility has been in the works for five years,” said Scott Brand, President and Chief Operating Officer of SIA. “Seeing the start of mass production is highly rewarding and the culmination of a lot of hard work by our associates.”
Starting Price and Engine
The 2026 Subaru Forester Hybrid starts at $38,015 and is available in four trim levels: Premium, Sport, Limited, and Touring. Under the hood is a 2.5-liter Atkinson/Miller-cycle SUBARU BOXER® 4-cylinder engine that works with an electric motor, generator, and electric traction motor and combines to offer 194 horsepower, an increase of 14 horsepower over the non-hybrid Forester. The Forester Hybrid also features a continuously variable transmission (CVT) for an optimal balance of performance and fuel efficiency. A Forester wouldn’t be a Subaru without the company’s beloved symmetrical all-wheel drive system, and the Hybrid model also has Active Torque Vectoring and SI-Drive performance management.
Another Word from Subaru
“Since joining the Subaru lineup in 1997, the Forester has been a popular vehicle,” said Brand. “With its addition to our product mix, along with the Crosstrek, we’re now producing the two most popular Subaru models in the U.S.”
The Forester Has a Safety Legacy
For 18 years straight, including 2026, the Subaru Forester has been ranked as a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). This is thanks to great engineering and the award-winning EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology, which is standard on all Subaru models.
Amazing Standard Safety Technology
The Forester offers a new, wider 180-degree camera view for even better visibility of cyclists and pedestrians. Other features include Reverse Automatic Braking, Blind-Spot Detection bundled with Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and Automatic Emergency Steering, which helps to avoid accidents within a lane at speeds below 50 mph.
