2026 Subaru Forester Earns Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS

Subaru has been selling cars in America since 1968, and in that time, the company has been known for three things: one of the best all-wheel drive systems, reliability, and safety.
The Forester Is a Safety Legacy
The Subaru Forester was first introduced in America for the 1998 model year, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) created the Top Safety Pick award in 2006, with the Top Safety Pick+ debuting for the first time in 2013. It has always been the IIHS’s focus not just to crash-test cars but also to raise awareness among consumers and automakers about the safety of various cars, trucks, SUVs, and vans. And since 2013, no carmaker has received more TSP+ awards than Subaru, with 75.
Eighteen Years and Counting
This year, 2026, also marks the 18th consecutive year that the Subaru Forester has earned either the Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ designation.

A Word from Subaru
“Safety remains a core focus for Subaru, and we will continue to design vehicles that support driver awareness and passenger protection across our lineup,” said Jeff Walters, President and Chief Operating Officer, Subaru of America, Inc. “Earning a TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation for the 2026 Subaru Forester from the IIHS is an honor and recognition to our teams working to make safety a priority for all our vehicles.”

An Update to the Moderate Overlap Test
The IIHS updated its moderate overlap test, and as a result, cars with the second-highest rating, Acceptable, in this new test were given the Top Safety Pick designation. The highest rating of Good made you a Top Safety Pick+ winner.
Base Price and Engine
The 2026 Subaru Forester is on sale now, with a base MSRP of $31,445 and available in six trim levels: Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, Touring, and Wilderness. All models come standard with the world-renowned Subaru Symmetrical all-wheel drive and a 2.5-liter Subaru Boxer 4-cylinder that produces 180 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). When properly equipped, drivers can tow up to 3,000 lbs.

Fuel Economy
The EPA estimates that the Forester will achieve 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. The off-road Wilderness trim gets 25 city and 28 highway.
Meet The New Forester Hybrid
For those looking for even better fuel economy, check out the new Forester Hybrid, with EPA-estimated 35 mpg city and 34 mpg highway. Starting at $38,015, the Hybrid is available in Premium, Sport, Limited, and Touring trims. Under the hood is a 2.5-liter Atkinson/Miller-cycle 4-cylinder paired with an electric generator motor and an electric traction motor. Thanks to both motors, the Forester Hybrid produces a total of 194 horsepower. Like all Forester models, the Hybrid also features a CVT.

Safety Is Standard at Subaru
Standard safety equipment on all Forester and Forester Hybrid models includes the advanced, award-winning Subaru Eyesight Driver Assist Technology, which includes High Beam Assist, Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB), Brake Assist, whiplash-reducing front seats, and much more.
