Many new compact SUVs claim to deliver an unrivaled driving experience. Not every new crossover, however, received accolades from a nearly-century-old auto industry authority known for its penetrating insights and analyses. 2020 Subaru Outback did. In fact, the editors at the helm of WardsAuto put it on their 10 Best shortlist for its "intuitive and effective interior features," recognizing as exceptional everything from its connectivity and infotainment features to its controls and driver-assist tech, not to mention its overall value.

They assessed 23 vehicles during the eponymous 4th annual competition, testing them on their ability to improve lifestyles and simplify using their respective technologies, rating each accordingly. The new Subaru Outback pulled ahead of its rivals in many ways. What did the reviewers single out?

  • The all-new infotainment system. It's tablet-style, a massive 11.6-inch multimedia marvel that's full high-definition and comes standard on all trim levels save the base. In short, a host of controls, from media and HVAC to vehicle settings, are available with a touch. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integrate your smartphone for use in-dash, and you can move and configure icons to your preferences. The top-of-the-line system brings TomTom navigation, which is manageable via voice activation, making getting around South Lake Tahoe a lot easier.
  • Subaru EyeSight Driver Assist Technology. A new advanced adaptive cruise control system and lane-centering function join forces with auto pre-collision brakes, throttle management, lane departure and lane sway warnings, a lane-keep assist feature, and high-beam assist. Together, they provide wraparound protection in Minden traffic. There's also a DriverFocus distraction mitigation system available, a segment exclusive, as well as LED steering-responsive headlighting, reverse auto braking to help you avoid backup collisions in Truckee, blind-spot detection, lane change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and a heads-up display for reviewing critical metrics on the way to Gardnerville.
  • Just the right combo of SUV capability and sedan-like ride quality. Standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, active torque vectoring (for cornering precision), vehicle dynamics control, an X-MODE (a wheel-slip reducer), and hill descent control are to thank for that.
